- young students learning English as a second language benefit from the Orton Gillingham approach in learning to read, speak, spell and write in English.
- it makes sense to them; OG spelling rules and phonograms to simplify reading and spelling.
The Orton Gillingham OG approach to language is individualized to the student’s needs and follows a multisensory approach using the student’s strengths. The student’s program is structured and sequential and based on their assessment builds on, from what the student has already mastered. In the language program we focus on learning alphabet (phonogram) sounds and symbol associations, penmanship, blending sounds and syllables to help the student decode words (read), learning spelling rules and understanding the structure of words to help the student encode words (spell), through an understanding of the building blocks of our language (sentence structure, paragraph composition) learn to express their thoughts through speech and to express their thoughts on paper. We will work through ‘writter’s block’ and the student will learn ways to help them express themselves on paper.
