The purpose for the Orton Gillingham (OG) Diagnostic Assessment
The Orton Gillingham assessment allows the OG tutor to develop a baseline of what the student knows. Whether the student has dyslexia, executive functioning or processing disability, or nonverbal, memory and motor disabilities an assessment is a very useful first step to beginning to work with the student. This information is used for preparing subsequent Orton Gillingham (OG) lessons for material that will be taught during the Orton Gillingham (OG) lesson(s) but also to know what is known and unknown for the student whether the learning disability is dyslexia or another learning difference or disability. The Orton Gillingham lessons are personalized lesson plans to meet the needs of the each student’s learning difference. While there is one official Orton Gillingham (OG) diagnostic assessment, a student’s knowledge is continually assessed in their lessons by the Orton Gillingham tutor.
The English language is broken into manageable pieces that are presented in an Orton Gillingham (OG) multisensory manner to the student to ensure an engaging, successful OG lesson.
The Orton Gillingham OG tutoring experience encompasses:

What is the Orton Gillingham (OG) approach in a nutshell?
Individualized
The teaching program is based on careful and continuous assessment of the student’s needs and the content presented must be mastered to automaticity.
Multidisciplinary
The approach draws from education theory, psychological education therapy, and brain research in order to create a program that works.
Multisensory
We use all the senses to work to mastery of the content presented. VAKT stands for: Visual Auditory Kinesthetic Tactile
Alphabetic/phonic
We teach the student how to read and write the sounds. Never let them read what they have not mastered to automatically.
Systematic
The timing of pieces taught suits the structure of the English language.
Synthetic and Analytic
When we synthesize we take the sounds and blend them. When we analyze we take the letter and find the sound for it.
Cognitive
The term “cognitive strategies” in its simplest form is the use of the mind (cognition) to solve a problem or complete a task..
Sequential and Cumulative
Sequential begin from the easiest and most basic elements and progress to more difficult.
Cumulative lesson is based on what has been done previously (already learned).
Focused on fluency
The ultimate goal is for the student to leave the program with linguistic fluency power.
Emotionally sound
The individualized teaching program is based on careful and continuous assessment of the student needs and the content presented as to allow the student to achieve true mastery and success.
Ultimate goal is communication
We teach the student to read so he/she can read the ideas to others and we teach them to spell so others can read his/her ideas.
